The Insider
Where on Eartha? In our last Where on Eartha challenge, we asked you to name the group of islands that is dissected by an imaginary line. Congratulations to Brad Dely, a Systems Specialist at Mittal Steel USA, Minorca Mine, for correctly identifying the Galapagos archipelago whose unique flora and fauna have intrigued scientists for centuries. For being the first correct entry pulled from the hat, Brad will receive a free copy of DeLorme's XMap 4.5 along with a world reference base map dataset. This month we journey to another environmentally significant corner of the globe, although in the case of the lake shown in the image below, the environmental significance is somewhat more disturbing. By way of offering a clue to its identity, a representation of this lake on a a map or atlas will likely be considerably different than is represented on this recent satellite image.

Think you know the name of the lake? Send your answer to contest@delorme.com before August 31, 2006 and you could be the next Where on Eartha winner. Good Luck! |

50% Off DeLorme Phone Data...only $24.98!
Phone2.jpg) For a limited time, get DeLorme Phone Data for 50% off! That’s 140 million business and residential phone listings that you can search, query, and create datasets from for less than $25 (discount reflected in Checkout)! If you aren’t familiar with the many great features that DeLorme Phone Data offers, read on!
The Phone Data dataset works in conjunction with the Phone tab to provide XMap users with the ability to search, map, and create datasets from business and/or residential phone listings in the U.S. Using the Phone tab in XMap is very straightforward. Depending of the amount of information that you type in to the search fields, the results can be a single entry or an extensive list. For instance, if you know the name and address of a person you wish to look up, a single match is usually all that will be displayed. If, on the other had, you want to build your own database of listings for a particular type of business within a city or even within a state, simply leave the name and street address fields blank and the search engine will try to match your criteria within the wider geographic area.
The Phone search functionality also allows reverse number searches. Enter a phone number into the Phone field, click Search, and the name and address of the number’s owner will be displayed. Furthermore, if you want to see a complete list of numbers within a specific area code and exchange, omit the last four digits of the number and a complete list will be generated.
Although the phone database is technically separate from the map database, it is possible to search for a phone listing based on information that is extracted from the map. To do this, right-click on a road on the map, and then select the Phone Listings option. A list of all of residential and/or business listings on that particular road displays in the Phone tab.
Once a search is complete, the result(s) can be added to the Selections list which contains options to display the result(s) on the map, export the result(s) as a comma-delimited text file, or create a spatial XData dataset. As an XData dataset, the phone search results can be queried, searched, and sorted in countless ways. For instance, you can create a subset of all of the numbers that are within a certain distance of a selected point on the map or that are along a route that you plan to drive.
DeLorme Phone Data adds a further level of utility to an already powerful application. For many XMap users, it is an indispensable component of the software. It is frequently stated that the value it adds far outweighs the cost to purchase the dataset.
If you would like searchable access to the contents of every phone book in the county, click here or call 800-293-2389. Reminder: If you order online, the 50% discount will be reflected in the Checkout. |

DeLorme Training
Are you fully utilizing the features and functions of XMap? Do you know how to search for phone numbers within a certain radius using your DeLorme software? Or can you place your company’s logo on the map at each of your branch offices? What about adjusting contour interval or the angle of the sun shadow on a topographic map?
Like most new users, you have probably been able to learn how to use the basic mapping tools and you may already be able to perform the steps that pertain to your specific needs. However, given the depth of functionality that is now included with all DeLorme software, it is likely that there are dozens of powerful features and functions that you have yet to explore and that may significantly increase the value of your investment.
An official DeLorme training program for you and your colleagues can help you appreciate the true worth of your purchase by optimizing your workflow and revealing the wide variety of mapping tools that you now have at your disposal.
Here’s what some recent training program attendees have said:
- “Your program was well presented, easy to follow, and likely saved my department many hours of personal training time.”
- “The training class helped us to quickly get up and running with XMap. It was especially useful to see our data incorporated into the class presentation.”
- “Thanks for the conducting the training program. I thought I knew everything there was to know about XMap/GIS Editor, but you certainly opened my eyes to several new possibilities for the software.
DeLorme can conduct a training program at your location, at DeLorme headquarters in Yarmouth, Maine, or online using a Web meeting service, whichever is most convenient to you. Because DeLorme has concentrated all of its operations in one location, trainers have direct access to technical support staff as well as software engineers who designed and developed the products and are therefore able to address virtually any product question that might arise.
To schedule your class, contact training@delorme.com or call David McKittrick at 207-846-7111 ext. 2391. |
