The Insider
Where on Eartha?
As it turned out, very few of you were stumped by the inverted image of Switzerland that was offered as last month's Where on Eartha challenge. The number of correct responses was higher than in any previous month! The first name randomly chosen from those who submitted a correct entry was George Bailey, an aviation professional. George will shortly be receiving a copy of XMap 4.5 which includes DeLorme's global vector base map.

This month we are looking for the name of the archipelago which is shown in the accompanying image. The unidentified line dissecting one of the islands should provide a clue.

Send your answer to contest@delorme.com before June 30, 2006 and you could be the next Where on Eartha winner. Good luck!

DeLorme Training
Are you fully utilizing the features and functions of XMap? Do you know how to search for phone numbers within a certain radius using your DeLorme software? Or can you place your company’s logo on the map at each of your branch offices? What about adjusting contour interval or the angle of the sun shadow on a topographic map?

Like most new users, you have probably been able to learn how to use the basic mapping tools and you may already be able to perform the steps that pertain to your specific needs. However, given the depth of functionality that is now included with all DeLorme software, it is likely that there are dozens of powerful features and functions that you have yet to explore and that may significantly increase the value of your investment.

An official DeLorme training program for you and your colleagues can help you appreciate the true worth of your purchase by optimizing your workflow and revealing the wide variety of mapping tools that you now have at your disposal.

Here’s what some recent training program attendees have said:
  • “Your program was well presented, easy to follow, and likely saved my department many hours of personal training time.”

  • “The training class helped us to quickly get up and running with XMap. It was especially useful to see our data incorporated into the class presentation.”

  • “Thanks for the conducting the training program. I thought I knew everything there was to know about XMap/GIS Editor, but you certainly opened my eyes to several new possibilities for the software.

DeLorme can conduct a training program at your location, at DeLorme headquarters in Yarmouth, Maine, or online using a Web meeting service, whichever is most convenient to you. Because DeLorme has concentrated all of its operations in one location, trainers have direct access to technical support staff as well as software engineers who designed and developed the products and are therefore able to address virtually any product question that might arise.

To schedule your class, contact training@delorme.com or call David McKittrick at 207-846-7111 ext. 2391.

Did You Know...Using the Find tab to Search for Openspace Objects
The Find tab in XMap offers a wide variety of search tools for accurately locating a specific map feature, or compiling a list of items that match your search criteria. While the QuickSearch tool is best for quickly finding an address, ZIP Code, city, etc., the powerful Advanced tool can be used to specify the type of object being sought and to establish the geographic area within which the search will be undertaken.

After opening the Advanced tool, you will see that among the Find options is a Category search. This can be used to find objects both within the base map database (such as landmarks, natural features, or businesses) and within any user-added map data, including Openspace GIS layers. By typing the name of the Openspace layer into the Keyword field, you can generate a list of GIS objects that fall within the selected geographic area.

For example, if your map is displaying an Openspace GIS layer showing your customers’ locations and you wish to generate a list of those that fall within a certain ZIP Code, use the following procedure.
1. In the Advanced section of the Find tab, select Category from the Find drop-down list.
2. Select ZIP Code from the Within list.
3. In the Keywords field, type the name of the relevant Openspace layer (Customers).
4. Type the appropriate ZIP Code.
After clicking the Search button, the results table will display all of the instances of your customer list that fall within that particular ZIP Code.

The Category search function allows you to search within several Openspace layers or to combine an Openspace search with a search for objects within another dataset. To conduct a multifaceted search, simply list the additional layer names or search categories in the Keywords field and type “or” between each. For instance, to concurrently search your customer database and locate the nearest restaurant, type “customers or restaurants” in the Keyword field.

For a more specific Openspace object search, Name and Category can be selected from the Find list. Using this option, the Openspace label name is typed in the Name field and the layer name is entered in the Keyword field. The result table will usually display just one object.

This Advanced search option offers a valuable enhancement to the GIS Query tool by allowing XMap users to locate an object or a group of objects based on geographical characteristics or location. In addition, after the search is conducted, you can right-click on an object in the results list to create a route or add a MapNote to highlight a particular search result on the map.
