Inside Briefs
Where on Eartha™? As many of you figured out, either by coordinate calculation or clue interpretation, December's Where on Eartha challenge was very appropriate in a seasonal sense. Santa was, of course, standing on Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean. Special mention must go to an unnamed entrant whose correct response was arrived at as a result of a Web search for "dog-shaped island." Unfortunately for this person, and fortunately for Margaret Chernosky, the winner was picked randomly rather than because of any creative sleuthing. Margaret will be receiving a copy of XMap 4.5 along with DeLorme's World Vector base-map, which she can use to determine if Christmas Island really is dog shaped. This month our journey brings us to a state capitol building in the U.S. Your challenge is to figure out which city and state we're looking at. If you're not sure of the correct response this time around, why not guess. After all, you have 1 in 50 chance of getting this one right. E-mail contest@delorme.com by January 31, 2006 with your best guess and you could be entered into the drawing for a copy of XMap 4.5.

Are You Using XMap To Its Fullest Potential?
Did you know that you can use XMap to overlay roads on top of your ADP data, use field-collected coordinates for image registration, or create a map symbol from your corporate logo? If you answered "no" to any of these questions, then perhaps you should consider a DeLorme software training class for you and your staff.
DeLorme's training department can deliver a customized program of instruction for your associates that will guide them through the workings of the software and it may even introduce a few tips and tricks along the way. Each training class will focus on the specific requirements of your organization and will, if possible, incorporate samples of the type of data that you typically use. The cost for DeLorme's training program starts at $300 per class, not per attendee, and can be delivered online, at your site, or at DeLorme headquarters in Yarmouth, Maine. The 2006 training calendar is already beginning to fill up, so contact DeLorme's training department today to make sure you are on the schedule. |

U.S. National Grid Available in XMap
If you're not already familiar with the U.S. National Grid (USNG), chances are you soon will be. Recent initiatives at the federal, state, and local levels have been promoting the idea of a consistent and uniform grid coordinate system that will provide an efficient reference mechanism for all location-based systems and services. To that end, the USNG has emerged as the preferred reference system and presentation format for National Spatial Data Infrastructure applications.
DeLorme has offered access to the USNG in all of our professional software products for the last three years and continues to work with agency officials to ensure that DeLorme products adhere to the necessary standards. From municipal government to homeland security, DeLorme mapping software and the USNG make an easy-to-use and powerful combination. For more information on the USNG, visit www.fgdc.gov/usng. |
